With the emergence of Buc-ee’s as a beaver-branded empire set on nationwide domination, travelers may be trying to identify the chain’s biggest rival. Is it Casey’s, Love’s Travel Stop, The Texan, or something else? Well, despite being nowhere near as widespread as Buc-ee’s, a family-owned business in Southeast Texas deserves your attention because it could and should be the No. 1 rival to the Texas-sized gas station chain.
The Prasek family has been serving smoked meats and roadside snacks to Texans for more than 50 years. You may have seen their cowboy hat-wearing sausage logo at H-E-B, but Prasek’s is home to two pit-stops that can rival anything the beaver has created.
For anyone who visits the original Prasek’s Family Smokehouse in El Campo or the newer outpost in Sealy, both about an hour east of Houston, you’ll see the signs long before you reach the store. With the size and scale of a Bass Pro Shop, guests at Prasek’s are greeted with lines of smokers and outdoor firepits before they even get inside the building. Once inside you’ll find grills and outdoor furniture before you even get through the sliding doors. From there you’ll be greeted to a full Texas-sized gas station with all the added perks.
Inside you’ll find sweets, treats, various bags of chips, beer and sodas like you would at any gas station. But you’ll also find El Arroyo-branded merch for sale, a full-on jewelry store and boutique, mugs for sale in the shape of guns, stuffed bears and elk heads, a wine rack, soda fountains, coffee roasters, pork rinds, flavored popcorns, jellies, jams, butters, spices, rubs and any number of salsas.
Just like Buc-ee’s you’ll find various beef jerkies, but you can also grab meat sticks, strips and bites with venison and bison flavors that you can’t find at Buc-ee’s. Our favorite is the peppered turkey jerky but more on that at another time.
Prasek’s sets itself apart from Buc-ee’s in its made-to-order section. Yes Prasek’s has cookies, kolaches, fudge and various other treats ready to eat, just like Buc-ee’s — just be sure to heat up your kolache in the microwave — but Prasek’s also acts as a meat market, offering guests everything from steaks and sausages to chickens and turkey. Plus, if you’re a hunter you can bring your deer or hog meat and Prasek’s will process it into steaks, jerky, stew meat and more.
There are plenty of gas pumps and unlike at Buc-ee’s, which has a strict truck policy, truckers are allowed to park on the perimeter of the parking lot. Also unlike Buc-ee’s, Prasek’s features a restaurant-style seating area. So, if you’re wanting to take a long break before hitting the road, Prasek’s has plenty of space to rest and enjoy a good drink. Wanting a warm meal? Prasek’s grill can fireup everything from burgers and grilled cheese to barbecue sandwiches and Philly cheesesteaks, as well as barbecue plates and steak dinners. There’s even a cylindrical tank to watch live fish swim by.
Prasek’s offers a spacious rest stop for weary travelers, offering many enjoyable drinks and treats like Buc-ee’s while also giving them a chance to rest, enjoy a freshly made meal and devour countless snacks without having to fear the droves of people flocking to the shop. If the family ever expands, the brand could easily rival Buc-ee’s’ offerings. In the meantime, it’s a perfect spot to fuel up for travelers between H-town and the Alamo City.
