LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock County Historical Commission will unveil a new Texas Historical Marker on Saturday, July 11 at 10:00 a.m. The event will take place at the northeast corner of University Avenue and Baylor Street.
Professional baseball came to Lubbock in 1922 with the team known as the Lubbock Hubbers, named after Lubbock’s nickname as a transportation hub. The Black Hubbers, Lubbock’s first African-American semi-pro baseball team, was formed by 1928. Both teams would win championships and earn accolades in the years that followed. Over the next five decades, baseball and the fields where it was played were a magnet for all local citizens. Beginning in the 1930s, the Hubbers played at a ballpark near College Avenue at 2nd Street, near the location of the marker and since demolished. The stories of the Hubbers and Black Hubber are an important part of regional sports history now recognized with a Texas Historical Marker.
The Lubbock County Historical Commission, in partnership with the Texas Historical Commission, brings attention to the real places and real people of Lubbock County as a way to preserve history. The LCHC has erected over 70 Texas Historic Markers telling the stories of Lubbock County.
