SAN ANTONIO – A local institution is having to drastically scale back services to elderly and disabled people across the community.

On Tuesday, Meals on Wheels San Antonio announced major cuts to service for hundreds of clients across the city starting the week of November 3rd.

The organization cites a significant reduction in funding from the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) as the reason for the reduced services.

This is one of the most difficult decisions we’ve ever had to make,” said Vinsen Faris, CEO of Meals on Wheels San Antonio. “We know how much these meals and visits mean to our clients — they provide nourishment, companionship, and safety.

Officials say the reduction means that many seniors currently relying on the program, as well as regular wellness checks, will no longer be served.

The suspension also affects AniMeals, a companion pet food service that many clients depend on.

Meals on Wheels says that a letter outlining details, resource referrals, and meal assistance alternatives is being sent to all affected clients.
