ARLINGTON — Rangers right-handed pitcher Kumar Rocker has thrown a couple dozen four-seam fastballs in the first inning of his starts this season. Only one ran slower, and only one landed closer to the middle of the strike zone, than the one he threw to baseball’s best hitter at the start of his final first-half appearance.
The ill-executed pitch was belted into the outfield seats, in part because the hitter at the plate has done as much more than almost anyone in the league this season, and in part because it doesn’t take an award winner to impact imperfections.

He allowed seven runs on eight hits — three of which were home runs — in a 9-3 loss vs. the Houston Astros at Globe Life Field on Saturday night. He allowed a two-run home run to Astros left fielder Yordan Alvarez in the first inning on a middle-middle four-seam fastball, a grand slam to right fielder LaMonte Wade Jr. in the third inning on a middle-middle slider and a solo home run to catcher Christian Vazquez in the fourth inning on a middle-middle cutter.
“The heart of the plate is where he got burned,” Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said. “I think the good hitters will make you pay when you continue to make pitches in the middle and up in the plate.”
Rocker has yielded a .347/.347/.569 slash line on pitches thrown over the heart of the plate this season, but when he works what Baseball Savant classifies as the shadow areas, or the inside and outside edges of the strike zone, the damage drops to a .234/.310/.323 slash line. It isn’t newsworthy that hitters are far more successful against pitches left in their wheelhouse vs. those on the fringes, but for Rocker, it’s a matter of whether he can limit those over-the-plate mistakes with a deep arsenal of weapons that still at times begs for more.
The 26-year-old largely relied on his slider, cutter and sinker in Saturday’s start. He mixed in a handful of changeups — his spring training project — but has still only scratched the surface of what that pitch can be as far as his manager is concerned. He threw only four heaters after Alvarez pulverized the first one he used and after the speed of each individual one wavered. Rocker blamed a velocity dip in his previous start on out of sync mechanics, though in that game, his speed gradually declined over the course of the appearance.

His four-seam fastball velocity fluctuated from 92.6 mph (which resulted in the first-inning Alvarez home run) to 95.5 mph (which resulted in a third-inning called strike) vs. the Astros and, if anything, ticked upward as his start went on.
“So that was interesting,” Rocker, who finished the first half with a 4.40 ERA in 90 innings, acknowledged. “I think it’s kind of a mental thing more than anything really.”
“In my opinion it is mechanical,” Schumaker said. “I don’t think it’s him being tired or anything because he says he feels good all the time.”
To that point: Rocker has now thrown more innings in the first half of this season than he has in any other professional season since he was drafted third overall four years ago. He threw 28 innings, 47 ⅓ innings and 83 ⅓ innings, respectively, in his first three professional seasons in large part due to an elbow surgery that derailed the first two. The Rangers have not discussed any sort of workload governance or innings limit this season, and Saturday, Schumaker reiterated on multiple occasions that he doesn’t believe Rocker has shown signs of fatigue.

“I do think you talk about how he feels, or if he needs maybe a start here or there pushed back, that type of thing, later on,” Schumaker said before Saturday’s game. “But so far, so good, knock on wood. He feels really good, and that’s the goal, for them to feel good through September.”
The best version of Rocker can help the Rangers play meaningful baseball once they reach that stage of the season.
It just needs to be fully realized, whether it is mental, mechanical or a combination of the two.
“I’m going to continue to get better,” Rocker said, “and give this team a chance to win.”
