LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock NAACP is hosting an event Thursday evening for teens to learn about the history of voting rights and what they need to know when they are old enough to vote.

The Lubbock NAACP is holding the “Own Your Power” voting event for teens in Thursday, July 16, 2026 from 5:30 to 7:00 at the MCM Elegante at 801 Avenue Q.
Young adults from the ages of 14-19 are invited to attend an upcoming workshop where they will learn the history of the struggle other generations have made to secure the right to vote. Plus, they will learn the nuts-and-bolts information that is needed when going to the polls. Teens and young adults from Lubbock and the surrounding area are invited to join their peers in this interesting and fun event that will include information, exercises and games.

Given the low voter turnout rate in Texas and in Lubbock, it is important to educate future voters about the importance and power of their votes. According to the Office of the Texas Secretary of State, fewer than ½ of voting age Texans voted in the 2024 presidential election, while even fewer voted in the presidential primaries for that year, 10.6% and 4.5% for Republicans and Democrats respectively. Researchers on younger voters at Tufts University have found that too many young Americans are disengaged from the political process, and therefore unprepared to go to the polls. In this event, our goal is to improve engagement and enthusiasm of future young voters.
