SULPHUR, La. (KPLC) – A high-speed chase that started in Sulphur Saturday night ended with a crash in Southeast Texas that killed two people, according to police.
Sulphur Police said an officer tried to stop a 2014 Mercedes around 9:15 p.m. on North Huntington Street near Pearl Street after the car was seen speeding.
Police said the driver did not stop and sped away, leading officers onto I-10 and I-210.
Police said speeds reached as high as 130 miles per hour as the car headed west on I-10 toward the Vinton area.
In the construction zone, police said the driver passed cars on the shoulder and hit traffic cones before crossing the Sabine River into Texas.
Police said the car later left the interstate in Texas. A short time later, a tire blew out, the driver lost control, and the car hit a guardrail before leaving the road and ending up in Adams Bayou.
Because of where the car ended up, police said officers could not reach it right away and did not see anyone get out.
After the car was recovered from the bayou, police said two people were found dead inside — an adult white male driver and an adult Black male passenger.
Police said investigators are working to confirm their identities and notify relatives.
The crash remains under investigation.
