The New York Yankees drafted El Paso’s Drew Gonzalez in the sixth round of the 2026 Major League Draft.
Gonzalez was the 189th overall pick on Sunday, July 12, which was the second day of the two-day draft.
Gonzalez graduated from Americas High School this past June and was the El Paso Times’ All-City MVP.
The 6-foot-1, 197-pound Gonzalez hit 13 home runs and drove in 54 runs in 2026 and helped the Trailblazers to the Class 5A, Division 1 regional finals. He played third base and shortstop for Americas.
Gonzalez worked out privately for several teams ahead of the draft, including the Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles.
If Gonzalez doesn’t sign with the New York Yankees, he has signed with Texas Tech University and could play for the Red Raiders.
