On Wednesday, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced that FM 308 over White Rock Creek near Elm Mott was fully closed for safety repairs. The agency directed motorists to use alternate routes, including FM 933, while the bridge remains out of order.
The unexpected closure drew questions from drivers, many of whom said they rely on the bridge for everyday travel.
“Can someone tell us what is actually wrong with the current bridge?” one person commented under TxDOT’s announcement posted to Facebook.
“This is absolutely crazy, There are people who need to drive this route daily,” wrote another. “Is there a date you guys will start to work on it? Or a day for completion?”
The closure is anticipated to be active for another week and a half, Jake Smith, PIO with TxDOT told Chron in a statement on Monday. TxDOT’s DriveTexas.org lists a closure through Sept. 1, 2026.
The bridge was reportedly closed after TxDOT crews discovered structural damage during a routine inspection, Smith said. Officials determined the bridge was unsafe for traffic, prompting its immediate closure until repairs are completed.
Until then, motorists will have to plan for detours and additional travel time when passing through the area, with both the north and southbound lanes currently closed to traffic.
