EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Gilbert & Sullivan Company of El Paso will celebrate its 57th season this summer with performances of “The Gondoliers”, a classic comic operetta by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.
According to a release from the company, the production satirizes class distinctions through the story of two Venetian gondoliers who unexpectedly learn that one of them is the King of Barataria and attempt to govern the fictional kingdom.
The operetta also follows Casilda, the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro, who discovers she was married to the missing king as an infant and is therefore the rightful queen.
The production features a cast of local volunteer performers under the direction of Artistic Director Brittney M. Williams.
The creative team includes Musical Director Marsha Watley, Chamber Orchestra Conductor Jesus Candela, and Collaborative Pianist Dr. Esequiel Meza Jr.
The company will open the production with two performances on Saturday, July 18, at Atkinson Recital Hall on the campus of New Mexico State University, located at 1075 North Horseshoe Street.
Additional performances will take place at the Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall at the University of Texas at El Paso, located at 500 West University Avenue, on July 24, 25, 26, 31, and August 1 and 2.
Founded in 1969, the Gilbert & Sullivan Company of El Paso has produced the works of the famed British composer-librettist duo for more than five decades, continuing its tradition of presenting operettas with local performers.
