LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The Lubbock City Council will continue its discussion on the city’s finances later this week, following earlier conversations about priorities for next year’s funding plan.
Among the first concerns raised were infrastructure problems in north and east Lubbock and city employee compensation. Council members said they are working to balance higher inflation with keeping property taxes as low as possible.
Animal Services faces vehicle shortage, aging fleet
One department that drew attention during the discussions was Animal Services. Director Steven Greene said purchasing vehicles has become a significant challenge for the department.
“Our vehicles cost about $105,000, engine and chassis, for now it’s a two-year wait,” Greene said. “We have five ordered — one is a replacement, two are for officers we got last year in the budget cycle. Some of our trucks are 2011 models.”
Council eyes expanded support for Animal Services
Council members said they want to increase support for Animal Services, noting the department assists many other agencies throughout Lubbock County. Potential additions could include more facility maintenance funding and certification raises.
Budget discussions are scheduled to continue Wednesday. The council has until October to pass a new budget and property tax rate.
