A national supermarket chain with a major focus on health is officially one step closer to reality in the Texas Hill Country. 

In a public notice shared by the city in July, officials said the necessary construction permits have been approved, clearing the way for developers to begin construction on the second and final phase of the town center, which will be anchored by a Sprouts Farmers Market. 

When it opens in 2027, Sprouts will become Boerne’s first major grocery competitor to H-E-B, giving residents another full-serviced super market option as the Hill Country suburb continues to see rapid residential and commercial growth. The Arizona-based grocery chain will join the area’s two H-E-B stores, both located within miles of one another along Interstate 10, where the Boerne Town Center is also located. 

The first phase of construction brought a new Chipotle, Chicken Salad Chick, and other stores to the area. Construction on the new store and the second phase of the development is expected to last for roughly one year, according to the city.

It will bring nearly 70,000-square-feet of additional retail space to the Texas Hill Country town.

Sprouts is known for its fresh produce, natural food and organic products. The new grocery store will claim 23,300 square-feet and two adjacent spaces associated with the construction will take up 15,079 square-feet and 29,969 square-feet of the project’s space. 

The project’s initial construction start date was set for January of 2026, according to a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) filing. The city said Boerne residents can expect to see work begin at the site in July.  Though all TDLR filing details are subject to change at any point, the project’s construction timeline is currently set for February 2027.

A key part of the project’s approval is a tree mitigation strategy intended to preserve the city’s scenic tree canopy. Developers paid the city a total of $2 million in tree mitigation fees over both phases of construction. 

A KFC, Panda Express, Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers and Hawaii-inspired coffee chain Bad Ass Coffee are also planned for the Boerne Town Center.
