LUBBOCK, Texas – College football rivalries can often bring out the competitive spirit in fans and alumni. Still, this weekend’s top-10 matchup between BYU and No. 9 Texas Tech is an opportunity for the two teams to help improve the community.
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and two-time NFL MVP QB Patrick Mahomes are teaming up with COUGS CARE when No. 8 BYU heads to Lubbock this weekend. This weekend’s project is a book drive supporting Literacy Lubbock.

Reid is a BYU alum, having played and coached under legendary Cougar head coach LaVell Edwards, while Mahomes once suited up for the Red Raiders before taking his talents to the NFL.
The duo encourages fans to donate new or gently used books at the pregame tailgate.
“No matter which team you cheer for, come out, lend a hand, and help families in Lubbock,” Mahomes encourages in a social media-based ad.
What is COUGS CARE?
Since 2019, COUGS CARE has redefined tailgating by partnering with opposing teams and hosting communities for game-day events that support local nonprofit organizations.
“COUGS CARE is a way to build bridges and give back to the hosting communities. I love working with our alumni volunteers as we serve Heavenly Father’s children around the country,” says Curtis Isaak, a senior manager of event and experience for BYU Alumni Relations.
COUGS CARE donated more than 5,000 pounds of food and nearly 6,000 items in 2024.
