Fans of Ted Lasso in San Antonio may have a chance to see the actor behind one beloved AFC Richmond player as his real-life Texas team comes to the Alamo City next month.
Cristo Fernández, who plays Dani Rojas on the popular Apple TV series, was signed to El Paso Locomotive FC as a forward back in May. The 35-year-old actor from Guadalajara made his official United Soccer League (USL) debut on Saturday, July 11, in the 79th minute of a 2-0 defeat by New Mexico United. Donning a No. 91 jersey, Fernández picked up a yellow card.
Fernández has a history of playing at the youth level, though a knee injury he sustained at 15 led him to act. But now that he’s back on the pitch for real after playing a fictional forward, fans in San Antonio may have the chance to see him at Toyota Field next month. San Antonio FC and El Paso Locomotive FC will face off here at home on Saturday, August 15.
“We are hosting El Paso Locomotive FC on Saturday, August 15 at Toyota Field, so there is a chance Fernandez is on the squad for that match,” a spokesperson for San Antonio FC told MySA via email. “We’re expecting a big ticketing night due to a few factors, including El Paso being our in-state rivals and it also being Spurs Night, usually one of our bigger theme nights of the year, but did see an increase in ticketing for the match after his signing was announced so people are definitely excited for the possibility. It should be a fun match for the fans all around!”
Tickets are still available and start at $21.65 per seat.
The match will take place just 10 days after Season 4 of Ted Lasso drops on Apple TV. Fernández has been confirmed to reprise his role as Rojas, the gleeful ladies’ man who’s always happy to remind teammates that “football is life.”
