The United Cajun Navy volunteers helped rescue a herd of horses stuck in floodwaters in Bandera on Wednesday, July 15, amid heavy flooding caused by storms in the area.
“Disaster response doesn’t stop with people. When it’s safe to do so, our teams work to save the animals that can’t escape on their own because every life matters,” the organization said in a Facebook post.
A group of volunteers temporarily relocated the horses seen struggling in the floodwaters to nearby ranches until they can be returned home, the United Cajun Navy said.
The horses were checked by a vet before being relocated, according to the group’s executive director, Sara Galliano II.
“Please continue praying for the families, first responders, volunteers, and communities across Texas as recovery efforts continue,” the organization pleaded with the public.
The rescue comes as Uvalde officials responded to 25 high-water rescues since activating a local emergency management center on Tuesday, July 14, officials confirmed in a press conference on Wednesday.
“As we speak, river levels are rising due to rains last night, and first responders are actively rescuing in the northern part of Uvalde County,” said Roy Kothmann, Uvalde County Commissioner Precinct 3.
Local law enforcement is monitoring street flooding as several low-water crossings remain barricaded. Residents are urged to avoid flooded areas and limit travel if possible. Officials are coordinating with county, state and federal agencies to help keep the public safe.
