It’s the end of an era for one of the oldest barbecue joints just outside the Dallas-Fort Worth area. After decades in business, Loco Coyote Grill at 1795 Co Rd. 1004 in Glen Rose is permanently closing. The restaurant’s team made the announcement on social media Tuesday, sharing that its final day of service will be on Sunday, July 19.
“Like many Texas BBQ restaurants, rising food, labor, and operating costs have made it impossible to continue operating. We are incredibly grateful for the support of our customers, staff, musicians, vendors, and community throughout the years,” Loco Coyote Grill’s Facebook post read.
Before closing its doors for good, Loco Coyote is inviting customers to help send the restaurant “off in style”. Customers can participate in one last round of Lotería on Thursday and get discounts on all merchandise.
“Thank you for being part of our story and for the memories we’ve shared,” Loco Coyote added.
To say the closure struck a chord with the community would be an understatement. In less than 24 hours, the announcement generated more than 600 comments and was shared more than 900 times, with reactions ranging from expressions of sadness to pleas for someone to step in and keep the restaurant open.
“The food! The staff! The location!” one person wrote. “Please someone buy it and continue to serve the biker and local community!”
“End of an era! A sad goodbye to one of the best hidden gems in country Texas. What a legendary run for a tucked-away rustic BBQ joint that served up more memories than it did giant burgers and coyote balls,” another wrote. “Thanks for being my family’s happy place for 15 years. Here’s to hoping one day this iconic hole-in-the-wall somehow reopens its doors!”
News of the closure comes about two weeks after the restaurant property was listed for sale for $2.2 million by Republic of Texas Land & Home. The asking price includes “the business, improvements, and extensive equipment and asset package (complete inventory available upon request),” which would allow a new owner to step into an operating business from day one, according to the listing.
When the property hit the market June 30, Loco Coyote’s team said the decision to sell was based on the owners’ wishes to relocate closer to family.
“Loco Coyote Grill is operating as usual, and we’re excited to continue serving our guests throughout the sale process. We appreciate everyone’s continued support and look forward to welcoming you soon!” the restaurant wrote.
Loco Coyote, a roadside barbecue haunt about 90 minutes southwest of Dallas, dates back to the 1970s, the Dallas Observer reported. Over the decades, it has changed hands several times.
Its most recent owners, Pilar and Larry Rogers, took over in November 2024 with plans to “preserve its legacy while also bringing in a fresh perspective.” They added fire pits, a covered outdoor patio and upgraded restrooms.
