AUSTIN, Texas (KWTX) — Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday the flooding battering Texas is “likely going to break records” as the state activated more than 1,300 personnel from more than 30 agencies to respond to severe flooding across the state.
Abbott held a briefing and press conference at the State Operations Center in Austin, where he outlined the scope of the state’s response.
“We are dealing with and responding to a flood that is likely going to break records,” Abbott said. “Our primary focus right now and throughout the remainder of this torrential rain is saving lives.”
The state has deployed more than 800 vehicles, more than 75 boats and 20 aircraft, Abbott said.
Abbott said he issued a disaster declaration for 59 counties and directed emergency response resources to be pre-positioned Sunday ahead of anticipated severe flooding. He also directed state agencies to remain fully engaged and ensure all necessary resources are in place to support affected communities.
State agencies are actively monitoring river levels and weather conditions while supporting local emergency management officials across the state.
Officials are urging Texans to follow the “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” warning and never drive through flooded roadways. Residents should continue monitoring local weather forecasts and have emergency supplies and evacuation plans ready if conditions worsen.
