David Brocklehurst, 49, of Vernon, Texas, escaped with only minor injuries Monday around 12:30 p.m. after his crop duster struck a communication pole, crashed and caught fire in rural Jackson County, Kansas, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s online crash report.
According to the crash report, Brocklehurst was flying the 1973 Botzko HP11-15 about 100 feet above the ground when the aircraft struck a communication pole about two miles east of Whiting before crashing west of Allen Road.
Despite the impact and fire, Brocklehurst managed to climb out of the wreckage and walk to a nearby farmhouse for help, Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse told local media. The Kansas Highway Patrol classified Brocklehurst’s injuries as minor.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.
