Fair Oaks Ranch officials say recent heavy rainfall triggered a 75,000-gallon domestic wastewater spill, raising concerns about contact with floodwater, soil, standing water and marine life in the affected area along Cibolo Creek.
Fair Oaks Ranch’s public drinking water system has not been impacted, per the city.
In a press release shared with MySA on July 16, the city stated that flash floods inundated a local lift station, shorting out electrical equipment and rendering the wastewater pumps inoperable.
“Drinking water continues to meet all Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) drinking water standards,” the release states.
Floodwaters blanketed the lift station, making it impossible to contain the discharge. The affected area extends from 29745 No Le Hace Drive northeast toward Cibolo Creek, 10 miles southeast of downtown Boerne.
Crews will begin cleaning up visible debris around the area when floodwaters recede and conditions become safe enough to enter. At that time, the water in the vicinity of the spill will be collected and tested. Residents who buy water from a public water supply should contact their providers to determine whether their water is safe for personal use.
In the meantime, Fair Oaks Ranch is advising locals with private drinking water wells within one-half mile of the spill area to boil water for at least one minute or use distilled water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and brushing teeth until their well water has been tested.
