The City of Uvalde has been gridlocked for hours as every major road in and out of the city has been closed to traffic and deemed impassable. For roughly eight hours, residents have been isolated in the city center amid torn-up highways and flooded roads.
Drive Texas, a map hosted by the Texas Department of Transportation, shows that U.S. 83 at the north and south ends of the city is closed due to flooding. Additionally, both South Getty Street (which becomes FM 117) and Eagle Pass Road (which becomes FM 481) are closed, and they serve as the two other main connectors to Highway 57.
Highway 90 has been closed for hours in multiple areas, from near the Texas-Mexico border to Sabinal. These closures are significant, as Highway 90 and Highway 57 are the only east-west connections out of Uvalde.
With Highway 83 and State Highway 55 also out of service due to rising rivers and streams, residents lost their north-south connection to the state.
Forecasters expect several more inches of rain to fall across the region this afternoon and evening, and it may be some time before the roads are open. Images shared by Sabinal Mayor Erik Gomez show Highway 90 severely damaged, littered with rubble and broken chunks of pavement after hours of rushing water.
Even local power providers are having to fly repairmen by helicopter into areas of Uvalde County that are inaccessible to trucks to restore power.
