BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Viewer-submitted videos show drivers cutting across lanes at the last second near the Texas Avenue exit along Highway 6 — a stretch that has seen traffic pattern adjustments during TxDOT’s Big 6 construction project.
TxDOT Public Engagement Specialist Kendra Welch said the Texas Avenue exit configuration is the same one drivers have been using since a switch earlier this year, but TxDOT added more signage after noticing confusion in the area.
“The Texas Avenue exit is still going to look the same as it did before the switch that we did back in March. That’s not changing. We’ve actually added some extra signage along the way since we’ve done that switch,” Welch said.
Welch said the safest choice for drivers who miss the exit is to keep going rather than trying to force their way across lanes.
“If you miss your exit, don’t panic. Just go up to the next exit, and you can do a U-turn and come back to Texas Avenue,” Welch said.
Crash numbers (Jan. 1, 2025–July 16, 2026)
According to TxDOT’s Crash Records Information System data provided in a Highway 6 crash dataset, there were 64 crashes along Highway 6 from Jan. 1, 2025, through July 16, 2026. The same dataset shows that each full year from 2020 through 2025 ranged between 25 and 35 crashes, meaning the most recent year-and-a-half total is higher than any single year in the data.
Welch emphasized reduced speed limits and driver awareness through the work zone.
“Make sure you’re slowing down. That reduced speed limit is really important, not just for our workers, but also for you. We want everyone to be safe on our roadways,” Welch said.
Since Jan. 1, crash counts are trending higher this year. In the same Highway 6 crash dataset, there were 31 crashes from Jan. 1–July 16, 2026, compared to 18 crashes during that same period in 2025 and in 2024.

Welch also said rain impacted the construction schedule this week, pushing planned overnight closures and a traffic switch into next week.
Drivers along Highway 6 should plan for overnight full mainlane closures and ramp closures next week, with closures starting at 7:30 p.m. and work continuing into the morning commute (until 6:30 a.m.).

NOTE: When the mainlanes reopen, traffic will shift from existing lanes onto the newly constructed temporary widening pavement. Drivers should be alert for new traffic patterns, follow posted signs, and allow extra travel time during closure hours.
TxDOT urges drivers to watch for orange construction signage, slow down through the work zone, and plan extra time.
