LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – The South Plains Food Bank now has the means to provide 42,000 meals to people in need thanks to a full truckload of food it received from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Travis Johnson, chief operations officer for the food bank, said people go hungry every day and this donation will have a big impact in feeding those who need it most.

“Hunger is 365 days a year, not just when there is a government shutdown,” Johnson said. “It’s during the holiday season, and it’s also in January and February after the holiday season,” Johnson said.
Cheri Gerwig, communications director for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the Lubbock area, said the church is honored to be able to help the community in any way it can.
“We all know that things are hard, and we’re just grateful to have this opportunity to really help those in need beyond just the church members; it’s about the entire community,” Gerwig said. “I know we’re all in this together, we want to help each other, just a wonderful opportunity and we’re so grateful to be a part of it,” Gerwig said.
But Johnson said the food donated will not stay on shelves for long.
“So, the next steps for the food is, we will immediately try to get it out to the families that are in need,” Johnson said. “Our job is to not hold onto the food for very long, and so we’re going to be packing boxes as quickly as we can and getting it to those who are in need,” Johnson said.
Gerwig said knowing this donation will help bring families together to enjoy a meal is what makes all the time spent well worth it.
