LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Several Democratic candidates on the November ballot held their South Plains swing tour on Saturday, meeting with voters in Lubbock’s Depot District as part of a three-day tour aimed at energizing Democrats across the region.
The group included Austin state Rep. Gina Hinojosa, who is running for governor against incumbent Greg Abbott; Austin state Rep. Vikki Goodwin, who is running for lieutenant governor; agriculture commission candidate Clayton Tucker; and congressional candidate Kyle Rable.
Hinojosa pitches ‘American Dream agenda’
Hinojosa is challenging Abbott, who won Lubbock County in his last election with 69% of the vote.
“I’m running on the American Dream agenda, an agenda that is short and simple,” Hinojosa said. “It is save Texas schools and put money in your pocket.”
Hinojosa said she rolled out a proposal last week that would send $1,500 to every Texas household.
“Right now, we are all paying into a system that is working against us,” she said. “The system is broken, nobody trusts it, I don’t trust it. Right now, the right thing to do to build trust is to give that money back to the people of Texas who know how to spend it better than government.”
Rable targets 19th Congressional District seat
Rable is running in the 19th Congressional District, which has not sent a Democrat to Capitol Hill in 40 years. He faces Republican Tom Sell in November.
Rable said he is the candidate who will put West Texans first and not corporate and Capitol Hill suits.
“I actually want to put America and West Texas first, not corporate donors, not millionaires, not billionaires, but instead I want to put West Texans first, I want to put America first. I want American jobs, I want American workers in those jobs. I want to ensure that we keep our family farms and our families, and go to church every Sunday. In short, I want West Texas to be West Texas and work better for the average West Texan,” Rable said.
Additional candidates, upcoming tour stops
Also attending Saturday’s event were Malik Williams, the Democrat challenging state Rep. Dustin Burrows, and Riley Rodriguez, the Democrat challenging state Sen. Charles Perry, along with candidates in several other races.
The tour continues Sunday with stops in Plainview and Big Spring. Voters can meet the candidates at the Hail County Senior Center from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and at the Cactus Room on Howard College’s campus from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The group then travels to Abilene on Monday for an event at the Public Library South Branch from 5 to 7 p.m.
