According to Water Data for Texas, the Texas Hill Country hotbed is now 98 percent full as of Sunday, July 19. Yes, you read that correctly, 98 percent. It was only on Friday that Canyon Lake had risen to 76.3 percent with a mean water level of 897.09. The new height at that time had actually surpassed its growth from the July 4, 2025, floods. With that figure on Friday being its highest level since 2023.
As we all experienced this week, recent heavy rainfall led to historic flooding in Texas while significantly raising lake levels throughout the state. Medina Lake, another Hill Country waterbed, also saw boost in water levels. Just last week, Medina Lake was only nine percent full. However, as of today, it had risen to 26.4 percent capacity.
It should be noted though. While the growth in levels at Canyon Lake is a positive sign for the major body of water in the Hill Country, the surge in water has caused a large number of debris and sediment to enter the lake. The issue has now threatened the drinking water communities use near Canyon Lake. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has since ordered multiple communities to boil their water prior to drinking, cooking and ice making in order to kill any bacteria and microbes.
And despite the lake’s rising, Comal County says that all nine county-maintained boat ramps are still closed, meaning no boat launches, swimming, kayaking or any other water activities. Why so? The debris mentioned earlier is still plaguing the lake, officials say.
“The recent flooding pushed a large amount of dangerous debris into the lake, and it isn’t always visible from the surface,” Comal County said online. “Our crews and our partners on the lake, including the Water Oriented Recreation District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, need time to evaluate conditions before it’s safe to reopen. This is all with your safety in mind. We’ll share updates as soon as possible. Until then, please keep our boat ramps clear and give our teams the room they need to make it safe for everyone.”
