LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) – The South Texas Food Bank is calling for community support after flooding struck most of its service area, marking the first time in the organization’s history that the majority of its counties have been impacted simultaneously.
According to the food bank, six of the eight counties it serves — Val Verde, Maverick, Kinney, Dimmit, Webb and Zapata — are reporting flood-related damage.
Relief efforts underway, but access remains difficult
The food bank said it has started moving emergency food boxes, water and cleaning supplies into Val Verde, Kinney and Dimmit counties. Ongoing flooding, road closures and dangerous travel conditions are limiting access to some communities.
CEO Alma Boubel said the scope of the disaster is unlike anything the organization has faced before and that community support is urgently needed to help families, children and seniors. The food bank is coordinating with local and state emergency officials, law enforcement, Feeding America, Feeding Texas and other partner organizations to direct resources where they are needed most.
How to help
The food bank is asking volunteers and donors not to drive through flooded areas or on unsafe roads. Three ways to help have been identified:
