LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Sydni Sherman is getting ready for a 14-hour trip; her car is packed and she’s taken time off work, but this isn’t a vacation for her. Rather, it’s a trip to help others.
At least two people are dead after the rain and flooding in central Texas, and Sherman is working to make a difference, with the help of some community members.
“I wanted to do more and I thought I wish I could go down there and I did,” Sherman said.
Sherman packed up her car with supplies that have been donated through a Facebook page called Project Texas Flood Relief.
“Sending money, thoughts and prayers and stuff just didn’t feel like it was enough,” Sherman said.
This isn’t the first time she’s made the trip to Texas to help clean up. Sherman went in summer 2025. This year she’s heading down earlier with water and nonperishable foods.
“It just sparked a passion for disaster relief and search and rescue and things like that that I didn’t even know I had until I got that experience,” Sherman said.
Sherman said those in Texas aren’t in the cleanup phase yet, so right now they need essentials to get ready. She said seeing the community come together helped inspire her to go back.
“These people lost their houses,” Sherman said. “Lost their loved ones and were still showing up for their neighbors ”
Sherman said she’s used to helping others. She’s a Certified Nursing Assistant and her background has prepared her for the work.
Sherman said she’ll be heading out Tuesday morning and is still accepting donations until then.
