Families across the Borderland are preparing for the start of a new school year, and the Ysleta Independent School District is set to welcome students back to class Aug. 3.
YISD Superintendent Dr. Xavier De La Torre joined KFOX14 Community Conversations segment to discuss the district’s priorities heading into the new year, including what families should know before the first day of school.
The discussion also focused on the importance of student attendance from the start of the school year, with questions centered on why it matters for students to be in class from day one.
Budget pressures facing school districts across the region were also part of the conversation. YISD is facing a projected deficit of about $12 million for the new school year, raising the possibility of staffing cuts.
De La Torre was asked how the district is working to ensure students and classrooms are not affected.
