Even for Texas, last week’s weather was extraordinary. Days of torrential rain sent rivers to record levels, flooded communities across a broad swath of the state and spawned a tornado in San Antonio.
Across an area stretching from Del Rio, Uvalde and Concan to Kerrville, Fredericksburg and Johnson City, the flooding killed two people and damaged homes, businesses and roads. The storms came just over a year after the devastating July 4, 2025, floods that left at least 139 people dead. With that catastrophe still fresh, heightened awareness and improved warning systems may have helped prevent a far greater loss of life this time.
