Oscar and Haydee Rodriguez, owners of Tortas Insurgentes, created in April the Mega Torta, a massive Mexican sandwich that looks more like a feast than a simple sandwich.

The base of this monumental torta is an oversize bun filled with one pound of breaded chicken, one pound of breaded beef, one pound of ham, one pound of sauasages, half pound of chorizo, quarter pound of bacon, three eggs, an avocado, beans, cheese, pineapple, tomato, onion and jalapeño.

Weighing over 8 pounds and measuring 14 inches long and 5 inches tall, this torta can feed between 10 and 12 people, but there’s a challenge that several people have attempted — and only James Webb, an Australian influencer who specializes in food challenges, has succeeded.

“Anyone who wants to come and take on the challenge is welcome to do so,” said Haydee Rodriguez, co-owner of the restaurant. “If they eat the Mega Torta in less than 20 minutes, they win $150 and don’t have to pay for it. But if they don’t make it, they have to pay for the meal.”

The Mega Torta costs $75. The restaurant sells it not only to those who eat it there — with family or friends — but also for events and parties.

Its combination of flavors and textures captures the essence of classic street tortas in Mexico City, where this type of torta, which includes a little (or, in this case, a lot) of every ingredient, is known as a Torta Cubana.

“We’re a restaurant serving Mexico City cuisine, and the torta is par excellence one of the most popular street foods in the Mexican capital,” said Oscar Rodriguez, co-owner of the restaurant. “When we thought about making this giant torta, we said, ‘Why not?’ And it actually worked out.”

In recent years, giant foods have found a loyal following on social media, with challenges drawing international influencers to restaurants in Dallas to test their skills as consumers of massive meals.

In addition to the Mega Torta, Tortas Insurgentes serves traditional-sized tortas, tacos, quesadillas and other classic dishes from Mexico City.

Those who want to take on the Mega Torta challenge should contact the restaurant beforehand, as the bread is made to order.

Tortas Insurgentes has several locations in the D-FW area, but the Mega Torta is only served at the location at 3701 W. Northwest Highway, Dallas. tortasinsurgentestx.com.
