The Rangers trifecta of top draft picks have all agreed to deals and are expected to be introduced Tuesday afternoon at Globe Life Field.
The team officially announced agreements for first-rounder Gio Rojas, second-rounder Connor Comeau and third-rounder Brody Bumila on Tuesday morning.
According to MLB.com’s Jim Callis, the Rojas deal was for $4.6 million, almost $500,000 below slot value, while Bumila’s deal was reportedly worth $2.75 million, almost $2 million above slot. Combined with five other picks in the top 10 who have already signed for well below slot, the Rangers have spent $7.53 million of their $10.219 million bonus pool. It left them with about $2.7 million for Comeau, fourth-rounder Hudson Calhoun and eighth-rounder Kolby Branch to finish out their signings in the first 10 rounds.
Comeau, a high school shortstop from Austin Anderson, had a slot value of $1.81 million but is expected to get something above that. Calhoun’s slot was valued at $664,000 and Branch’s was valued at $236,000. Branch, a college senior, has no real leverage in bargaining and is expected to get well below that. Each of the other picks between Rounds 6-10 received $2,500 bonuses.
