LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A very warm and very breezy afternoon will follow our chilly morning. Winds return this weekend as some of the coldest air of the season spills across West Texas and the South Plains.
Very breezy and very warm this afternoon with near record high temperatures Thursday afternoon.(KCBD First Alert)
Temperatures peaking near records for the date, very dry air, a sunny sky, and a southwesterly wind increasing to around 15 to 25 mph (gusts up to 35 mph possible!), all combine to make today a NO BURN DAY.
Wind, dry air, dry vegetation, and near record high temperatures result in an elevated grassland fire danger this afternoon.(KCBD First Alert)
The elements noted above will elevate the grassland fire risk this afternoon. In these conditions, grass fires may ignite easily, spread rapidly, and be difficult to bring under control. Please be careful during outdoor activities which may involve flames, sparks, or extreme heat.
Wind speeds will drop off quickly after sunset, which happens just before 6 this evening. This evening otherwise will be partly cloudy, dry, and cool.
Skies clear overnight, winds diminish, temperatures fall into the 40s.(KCBD First Alert)
I expect less warmth and less wind tomorrow. After a chilly morning, afternoon highs will be in the 70s, still above the average high of 68°. The morning breeze will range from around 10 to 20 mph, during the afternoon decreasing to around 5 to 15 mph.
Temperatures trending downward this weekend!(KCBD First Alert)
There are some changes to my outlook for Game Day. I anticipate Saturday’s cold front to arrive in the Lubbock area by late morning, rather than during the afternoon. That would ramp the wind up sooner while and limit afternoon warming.
Coldest air of the season so far expected late in the weekend.(KCBD First Alert)
Lubbock yesterday recorded a high temperature of 81°. The city’s record high for the date is 86°, set in 1916 and tied on the date in 1924. The record high for November 6, today, is 87°, set on the date in 2023. The average high for the time of year is 68°.
