From lightning-fast barrel racing to fearless bull riding, the 37th Annual Texas Black Invitational Rodeo promises an unforgettable night of Western thrills that showcases skilled Black cowboys and cowgirls competing in various rodeo events.
The Texas Black Invitational Rodeo will have generations of Black Western heritage on full display. It was created when African American Museum Dallas founder Harry Robinson Jr. teamed up with Cleo Hearn to create a rodeo that highlights the history of Black cowboys in American culture.
This year’s rodeo will be extra special because it will honor the life and legacy of Hearn, who passed away in November at the age of 86. He is well known for creating the Cowboys of Color Rodeo and leading the Texas Black Invitational Rodeo at the African American Museum Dallas for 36 years. Hearn was also inducted into the Texas Black Sports hall of Fame in 2021 and the National Cowboy Museum and Hall of Fame in 2022.
The evening will feature multiple pros competing in traditional rodeo events like bronc and bull riding, calf and steer roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling, tie down roping and a Pony Express relay race. Plus a halftime performance from Chocolit Tye. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the rodeo begins at 7 p.m.
