Brinks Home, a Dallas-based home security company, was hit by a cyberattack that infiltrated the company’s IT systems, the company said Wednesday. Brinks Home did not disclose the identity of the attacker but also implied the company was being blackmailed.
“The party responsible for this situation has threatened to release information it claims to have taken,” Brinks Home wrote in an update published on its website. “We are aware that such material may be posted publicly.”
It was unclear exactly what information may have been exposed to the breach, but in a statement to The News the company emphasized that it was working “as quickly as possible to determine the full scope of what occurred” and that its systems are secure.
“Upon discovering the incident, we immediately activated our incident response plan, contained the activity, and engaged an industry-leading cybersecurity forensics firm to investigate,” the company said. “At this stage, we have no evidence that any personal or confidential information has been compromised or misused.”
Brinks Home also said it will provide more updates and “will notify affected individuals immediately should the situation change.” On its website, the company also advised customers to “remain vigilant against unsolicited emails, text messages, or phone calls requesting personal information or account credentials.” It was unclear how the company was responding to the apparent blackmail attempt, and Brinks Home did not immediately respond to a follow-up question from The News on the matter.
The cyberattack against the Dallas home security comes amid what appears to be a wave of similar incidents. On Monday, the Dallas city and police department websites went down as a result of one possible threat, and on Wednesday The News reported that a recent attack on Chick-fil-A customers had impacted nearly 2,200 Texans.
Brinks Home was founded in Dallas in the 1990s under the name Monitronics and in 2018 rebranded as Brinks Home Security as part of a trademark agreement with The Brink’s Company, the global cash security company. The Dallas company later shortened its name, and earlier this summer moved into a new, smaller headquarters in Farmers Branch that’s more in line with its recent focus on tech, CEO William Niles said recently.
