Amor Y Queso, the blue-walled cheese store in Deep Ellum, closed July 20, 2026, due to dwindling sales, owner Sarah Carlock said.

The bodega, located at 2932 Main St., reopened to the public on June 1 with an expanded offering of local snacks, sweets and pastries, as well as coffees, matcha and a sandwich menu, in the hopes of increased foot traffic during the World Cup. 

“It was busy enough to give me hope,” Carlock said. But sales dwindled over time. “I was losing money every day that I was open.”

Carlock announced the closure on Instagram on July 22.

The business stemmed from her passion and childhood tradition of making charcuterie boards with family. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she launched a catering business and eventually made about 40 cheese boxes every week using local ingredients.

In the first week of December 2020, when people started gathering again in masks, she opened her brick-and-mortar in Deep Ellum, the same blue-walled shop that closed on July 20.

She always dreamed about having a little shop where people could come and sit. “Then we could talk and I could sell other makers’ cool stuff.”

The 700-square-feet shop became a space for pop-ups and community gatherings.

“I’ve had the privilege of feeding countless people,” Carlock said. “I’ve had the absolute pleasure of getting to work alongside some of the most incredible chefs in Dallas.”

In 2022, Carlock stopped opening the shop to the public, partly due to a drop in traffic, and began to use it only as a prep kitchen for her catering business. But eventually that slowed down as well, and she had to look for other jobs.

This May, when the restaurant she managed closed, she decided to reopen Amor Y Queso to walk-in customers. It was open for almost two months before she closed it.

“I won’t have to buy my kids school snacks at least through December,” she said, “because I’ve got an entire store full of snacks that never sold.”

Carlock hopes to continue her catering business in the future through a commissary kitchen, a space where businesses prep their food.
