EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Triple-digit temperatures are settling in the Borderland as monsoon moisture begins to fade, bringing hotter and drier conditions through the end of the workweek.
KTSM 9 News has issued a Weather Authority Alert as a high-pressure system is building over the region and will push temperatures to around 105 degrees Friday across El Paso, the Mesilla Valley and other lower-elevation communities. A Heat Advisory has been issued for El Paso, Las Cruces and most areas for Friday, starting at 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Temperatures are expected to remain above 100 degrees through the weekend and into early next week.
While the heat will be the main story, isolated thunderstorms are still possible Thursday and Friday, primarily over the higher mountain areas. Storm coverage is expected to remain limited, however.
Rain chances improve slightly this weekend as additional moisture begins to work back into the region. Scattered afternoon and evening storms will be possible Saturday and Sunday, with the greatest chances focused over western New Mexico.
Even with the slight increase in storm activity, much of the Borderland will remain hot and dry.
Looking ahead to next week, moisture may gradually spread eastward, but with limited widespread monsoon rainfall.
Residents are encouraged to take precautions during the heat by staying hydrated, limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and checking on vulnerable family members, neighbors and pets.
