TEXAS — A magnitude 5.0 earthquake was recorded in the Texas Panhandle on Thursday morning.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 5:21 a.m., and the epicenter was a little over 23 miles southeast of Spearman, Texas. The depth was projected at 3.1 miles.
People in Oklahoma, including Tulsa and Oklahoma City, and southwestern Kansas even reported feeling weak or light shaking.
The survey estimated a low likelihood of damage and economic losses from the earthquake.
“Overall, the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist. The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and reinforced masonry construction,” the U.S. Geological Survey said.
According to the City of Spearman, no damage or injuries had been reported Thursday morning.
“Aftershocks are likely. Earthquakes this size are often followed by smaller aftershocks for days, sometimes weeks. Most will be minor, but stay alert,” the city said.
