EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The City of El Paso unveiled the new renovations to a fire station in the Northeast.
On Wednesday, the City held an “uncoupling ceremony” to celebrate the upgrades added to Fire Station No. 23 at 5315 Threadgill Ave.

What are the upgrades?
The City detailed that the inside of the station, ceiling, doors, lighting, electrical, plumbing, and other infrastructure such as lockers were improved. On the outside, ADA-compliant sidewalks and ramps were built, and the roof was repaired. Also, the technology systems were upgraded and new AC and heating systems were added.

According to the City, the $1 million renovation project is part of the voter-approved 2019 Public Safety Bond Program, which is meant to upgrade emergency and fire response services with new amenities and facilities and was led by the Capital Improvement Department.
KFOX14/CBS4 spoke with the El Paso Fire Department’s Fire Chief Jonathan Killings, who said he was happy for the crew to see the renovations.
“This is one of the busiest stations in the city, so we want to make sure when our firefighters come home, back to their station, they have a nice, comfortable place to rehab and get ready for that next call and be available,” Killings said.

When talking about how the project is part of the bond, Killings touched on the timeline of completing these upgrades as the pandemic derailed several projects.
“There were some delays that we saw implementing some of these projects because of COVID and those are understandable but now we are up to speed and we’re running so this last year was a huge push, we’ve touched over 17 facilities across the city, we are going to continue to do more and we’re not going to stop until pretty much every facility is renovated, updated,” Killings said.
