EL PASO, Texas (KFOX 14, CBS 4) — Trevor Vittatoe made his mark at UTEP by rewriting the program’s record books. The Miners quarterback, who starred from 2006-10, still owns the school’s career records for passing yards and passing touchdowns.

Now, he’s focused on helping the next generation of Borderland athletes create their own success.

On Saturday, Aug. 1, Vittatoe, along with fellow UTEP football alumni and other high-level coaches, will host the Summer End Skills Camp at Andress High School from 6-9 p.m. The camp is open to athletes ranging from 5 years old through the varsity level and will feature position-specific coaching designed to prepare players for the upcoming football season.

“The biggest thing we are going to work collectively on is confidence in the kids themselves,” Vittatoe said. “Just helping them in believing in themselves every time they step on the field. We are going to have attention on every different position on the football field with really good instruction.”

While the on-field instruction is a major focus, Vittatoe says the event is ultimately about serving the El Paso community.

From 5:30-7:30 p.m., local doctors will provide free sports physicals, while barbers will offer free haircuts to help families prepare for the start of the school year and football season.

“It is an opportunity for the community to come together and create some type of excitement heading into the new football and school season,” Vittatoe said. “It can be stressful for some of the kids and some of the families, so we are trying to provide them with some opportunities that they may not have been able to take advantage of at the end of the school season. It is more of a collective to get people together and help some kids that maybe aren’t as privileged as others.”

In addition to the camp, the event will feature local vendors, a DJ, giveaways and other family-friendly activities, making it a community celebration as much as a football clinic.
