AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) -The Amarillo chapter of the Texas Association of Sports Officials hosted its annual football clinic Saturday, bringing together officials and area coaches ahead of the upcoming high school football season.
The clinic covered new rule changes, mechanics and communication, helping officiating crews prepare before the season begins. Newer officials had the opportunity to learn from veterans, while area coaches attended to ask questions and gain a better understanding of rules heading into the fall.
Chapter president Esrael Silva said being an official carries a deeper meaning beyond calling penalties.
“Part of being an official is being a part of the Friday Night Lights,” Silva said. “There is no feeling other than playing or coaching — your next step would be to be on the field with us as an official. At times it can be tough, it can be where you’re struggling with what’s going on around you. But at the end of the day, as you’re giving back to the Texas Panhandle and the Texas student athletes, it’s a feeling that’s unmatched and rewarding — so self-rewarding.”
The Amarillo chapter is accepting applications from those interested in becoming a referee.
