Drivers heading to Galveston on the Gulf Freeway will experience reroutes and closures for the next two years as the Texas Department of Transportation I-45 expansion project continues.
This will lead to the permanent closure of the westbound state Highway 146 connector to southbound I-45 at the Texas City Wye, the city said in its post.
For the Highway 146 detour, drivers will turn right onto the I-45 northbound frontage road, merge onto the northbound mainlanes and exit at FM 519. They will then make a U-turn at FM 519 and head south onto the southbound mainlanes, according to the city.
The work is part of a longtime project that also includes widening I-45 to a total of four lanes in each direction from the Galveston causeway to 61st Street on Galveston Island.
