CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (KFDA) – The Amarillo Sod Poodles defeated the Corpus Christi Hooks 5-2 Sunday night at Whataburger Field, splitting the series and finishing the nine-game road trip with a winning record.
A four-run sixth inning ended a multi-game scoring drought for Amarillo and provided enough offense for the pitching staff to close out the win.
Scoreless through five
Starter Avery Short needed just nine pitches to work through the first inning and faced the minimum through three frames. Josh Grosz came on in the fourth and inherited a bases-loaded situation after the first two Corpus Christi batters reached and stole bases, but struck out three straight batters to keep the game scoreless.
Amarillo breaks through in the sixth
Cristofer Torin and Jansel Luis both singled to put runners at second and third with no outs in the sixth. Ben McLaughlin drove in the first run with a grounder up the middle. Alberto Barriga followed with an RBI single, and Jakey Josepha added his first Double-A RBI with a base hit to push the lead to 3-0. Barriga scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0 by the end of the inning.
Junior Franco tripled and scored on McLaughlin’s second RBI single of the game in the seventh to extend the lead to 5-0.
Hooks rally falls short
Corpus Christi scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on a Cameron Sisneros RBI single and a run that scored on an error. The rally ended when right fielder Angel Ortiz threw out Chase Call at the plate on a shallow fly ball for an inning-ending double play, his third outfield assist of the week.
Sandro Santana and Blake Cederlind each worked a scoreless inning in the eighth and ninth to close out the 5-2 win.
