The University of Texas at Arlington is taking a lead role in developing “trustworthy” AI models for use in high-level scientific experiments as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission.
The energy department announced the first round of funding for the AI initiative this week in Washington, D.C. Genesis Mission aims to build the world’s most powerful integrated science discovery platform, according to a news release from UTA.
Habeeb Olufowobi, a faculty member in the university’s department of computer science and engineering, is leading the AI project, according to the news release.
“Our goal is to develop practical technologies that help scientists confidently use AI in some of the world’s most advanced research facilities without compromising the integrity of experiments or the reliability of scientific results,” Olufowobi said.
Two graduate students from UTA will work on the project, along with collaborators from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the University of Colorado–Colorado Springs, Washington State University and Metro State University.
Olufowobi said the work will begin in September and run through May. He added that he wasn’t surprised when he learned that UTA was among the universities chosen for the Genesis project.
Olufowobi also provided an example of how a trustworthy AI model is key in certain situations, such as when there is output to the electricity grid.
“If it’s not correct, it could have a catastrophic effect,” he said.
Jennifer Cowley, president of UTA, was also on hand for the DOE presentation.
“This award reflects UT Arlington’s role in solving problems of national importance,” Cowley said. “It will give our students hands-on experience at the forefront of AI and cybersecurity research.”
