A 21-year-old man armed with a knife was shot and killed by a Fort Worth police officer early Sunday, in the department’s second fatal shooting within hours, police said.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Andrew Isaiah Ponce.
The shooting occurred after officers responded to a domestic disturbance call about 6 a.m. in the 9200 block of Renee Circle, in west Fort Worth near Loop 820, Chief Eddie Garcia said.
According to police, Ponce kicked in a door to break into an apartment and got into a fight with a woman inside that apartment. At some point, the suspect grabbed a knife and was using the weapon during the altercation with the resident, Garcia said. According to a 911 call log, the woman reported the suspect was her ex-boyfriend.
When officers arrived, they confronted Ponce, who was then outside the apartment and still had the knife, the chief said. Ponce was in the parking lot and was holding the knife to his own throat, police said in a news release.
Garcia said officers gave Ponce multiple commands to drop the weapon, but he refused and continued to walk toward the officers. At least one officer then fired on the man.
Garcia said the suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds. According to the medical examiner’s office, after he died at John Peter Smith Hospital shortly after 7 a.m.
On Saturday night, Fort Worth police shot and killed another suspect who pulled a gun on officers following a short car chase that ended near the I-35W service road on the city’s far south side, Garcia said.
According to police, that man had an active felony warrant after cutting off his ankle monitor following a previous arrest for failure to update his sex offender registration. The man, identified by the medical examiner as 56-year-old Ricky Shane Lindsey, was convicted in McLennan County in 2004 on three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one count of indecency with a child.
No officers or civilians were injured in either incident, police said.
The department’s Major Case Unit is investigating both shootings.
Police will answer questions about the shootings at a later news conference, likely next week, Garcia said. The department typically releases body-camera video at a press conference within a few days after an officer-involved shooting.
In a separate incident last week, an officer fired one shot at a woman who was accused of shooting a handgun at trees in a far south Fort Worth neighborhood on Belshire Court. The officer’s shot did not hit the woman.
Police searched the woman and her house, but they did not find a gun. Investigators found ammo inside her home that matched a spent shell casing from the scene, and they found an empty gun box with paperwork for a weapon matching the description given by witnesses, police said. The woman was arrested and faces charges of discharging a firearm and evading arrest.
