EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14/CBS4) — Multiple power outages are being reported across El Paso on Monday evening, leaving hundreds of residents without power as triple-digit heat continues.

According to El Paso Electric’s power outage map, residents across El Paso are without power as of about 7:00 pm, with an expected restoration time of 10:00 pm as multiple outages are seen across the city.

The outages come as triple-digit temperatures are expected to continue through Tuesday, as afternoon temperatures will soar well into the triple digits, with the Borderland expected to reach between 104 and 106 degrees.

In a statement to KFOX14/CBS4, El Paso Electric confirmed 28 active outages are affecting approximately 1,078 customers and are working to respond to the outages

“We are currently seeing several scattered outages across portions of our service area and our crews are working to restore service as quickly and safely as possible. We have all available resources actively responding to outages and restoration efforts. With the region under a heat advisory, customers are using more electricity to keep their homes cool. At the same time, the equipment that delivers power is operating outdoors in extreme temperatures. Electrical equipment naturally generates heat as it operates and relies on cooler surrounding air to release that heat. When temperatures remain very high, especially during periods of increased electricity use, the equipment has a harder time cooling itself, which can place additional stress on the system and contribute to localized outages,” EP Electric spokesperson said.

EP Electric added, “It’s important to note these outages are not the result of a lack of available power. El Paso Electric has sufficient resources to meet customer demand. We understand outages are especially challenging during extreme heat and appreciate our customers’ patience as crews continue restoration efforts.”
