A stretch of Norton Drive is now closed as crews begin replacing a bridge in Brownsville, marking the latest Texas bridge project to disrupt drivers and force detours.
The Texas Department of Transportation closed Norton Drive between Minnesota Avenue and Morningside Road starting Monday as part of a bridge replacement project. The closure is expected to remain in place through Sept. 17, according to the City of Brownsville.
Drivers who regularly travel through the area will need to follow posted detours and allow extra time for their commutes while construction crews work to replace the bridge.
The project comes as bridge closures and construction headaches continue popping up across Texas.
In Houston, drivers recently dealt with several major bridge disruptions, including closures tied to the city’s massive transportation projects. The Alabama Street Bridge near downtown Houston was scheduled to close for demolition and reconstruction as part of the North Houston Highway Improvement Project, with the closure expected to last into 2027.
The Houston Avenue Bridge over Interstate 10 has also become a notorious trouble spot after repeated truck strikes forced repairs and closures. The bridge has been hit dozens of times by oversized vehicles, prompting TxDOT plans to eventually replace it as part of the $400 million I-10 White Oak Bayou Elevation Project.
