Operation Safe Return returns Aug. 1 with 3,000 backpacks, free school supplies, immunizations, sports physicals and more for Coastal Bend families.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Thousands of Coastal Bend students will head back to school with the supplies they need thanks to the return of Operation Safe Return.
The annual community event will take place Saturday, Aug. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hilliard Center, offering families free school supplies, backpacks and access to important health services ahead of the new school year.

This year’s event will distribute 3,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to local students. Families will also have access to free sports physicals, immunizations and a sensory-sensitive zone designed to provide a more comfortable environment for children with sensory needs.
Melissa Castro, crime prevention specialist with the Corpus Christi Police Department, said the event has grown tremendously over the years.
What began with just 100 backpacks handed out from the back of a Corpus Christi police officer’s truck has evolved into one of the area’s largest back-to-school outreach events. This year, 145 community vendors will participate, connecting families with educational resources, health services and community organizations.
Officials remind parents planning to receive immunizations to bring their child’s vaccination records so medical staff can determine which vaccines may be needed before the start of school.
Organizers say the goal is to remove financial barriers for families while helping students begin the school year prepared and confident.
As the cost of school supplies continues to rise, events like Operation Safe Return provide valuable support for families throughout the Coastal Bend. Community leaders encourage families to arrive early, as demand is expected to be high.
