Off the primary bathroom of Carrie Henderson’s Dallas Georgian sits a dressing-room-and-closet combo that doubles as her quietest room in the house – the place she brings her coffee after the kids leave for school.
Carrie built and designed this home herself, and asked her architect for a generous closet right off the primary bath.
It’s lit by a chandelier from their previous home, modeled on the Swarovski crystal vine at Hall Winery in California; when friends bought that house, they told her to keep it, and this became its perfect spot. A bench she found after construction fits the space exactly.
The real story here is the hunt. Carrie’s mother taught her to yard-sale and estate-sale as a child, and the thrill never left. One unassuming estate sale nearby produced a wicker-and-lacquer satchel she fell for before noticing the Ferragamo mark – priced at $80, listed on Ferragamo’s own site that same day for $3,800. She pulled her kids into a back room to Google it together, a lesson in what a random Saturday sale can turn up. Her Stuart Weitzman shoes, a favorite, came from Neiman’s at $15 for a $500 pair, seemingly never worn.
She’s shifted toward wedges over heels – a legacy, she says, of her days walking DC – for shoes she can dress up or down and wear all day.
For Carrie, a closet like this isn’t about excess. It’s about the joy of the find, and imagining the fabulous earlier life of the pieces that now come with her to parties.
