JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The family of the two teens killed in a violent crash on Edgewood Avenue described them as active teens who were full of life, and they’re relying on their faith to get them through this trying time.
Officials identified the victims as Logan Zayeer Daniels and Dallas King. Their ages have not been released by JSO.
Shamair Jones still has a grateful attitude after losing her two young cousins.
“It’s all because of Jesus,” Jones said. “We can’t do this by ourselves. If it wasn’t for Jesus, we’d be going down, but because we know they’re still with us. They’re here in spirit.”
Jones said her cousins were very active at Pentecostal Church of God Christian Academy.
“They were goofy, full of life. Every time you were around, they’d make you laugh,” She said.
The Toyota Camry they were riding in was crushed under a large pick-up truck that was hauling two vehicles, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
The crash sent the 28-year-old driver of the Camry to the hospital with critical injuries after he was extricated by first responders, who found him trapped in the Camry when they arrived.
Sgt. Robert Hungerford of JSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit said that around 11:15 a.m. Saturday, a Dodge 3500 pick-up truck towing a large trailer loaded with two vehicles was headed eastbound on Edgewood Avenue West near the intersection of Lem Turner Road.
Investigators say the Dodge slammed into the back of the Camry, forcing it into the back of a Ford Ranger pick-up truck and pushing it through the intersection.
The Dodge ended up on top of the Camry.
Members of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department were able to get the driver out of the Camry. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
JSO said the driver of the Ford was also taken to the hospital and was in stable condition.
First responders found the two teen boys dead inside the Camry.
The driver of the Dodge, a man in his 50s, was cooperating with investigators, Hungerford said.
He said detectives were still trying to determine how fast the vehicles were traveling, but the sergeant said speed or braking is likely to play a factor, given how the Dodge which was pulling a trailer and heading downhill, went over the Camry.
Investigators are also trying to determine whether distraction may have played a role.
The family said that they’re staying strong by relying on their faith.
“Flesh is going to hurt, but they’re in a better place. Happy they’re in a better place. [They] don’t have to worry about anything here on Earth,” she said.
These were the 106th and 107th traffic fatalities in Duval County this year.
