EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — As students head back to school, El Paso County Attorney Christina Sanchez is urging families and students to take school threats seriously and to report them immediately, including threats made online.
Sanchez addressed concerns on KFOX14 Community Conversations about how often threats were reported last school year in the area, whether juveniles can face criminal charges for making threats online, and what long-term consequences those cases can carry.
She also discussed warning signs parents, teachers and students should watch for and what someone should do if they see a threatening post online.
Sanchez also highlighted the broader impact school threats have on campuses and communities, including the strain they place on schools and law enforcement resources.
Even when threats are ultimately determined to be false, she emphasized that investigations can be highly disruptive.
Sanchez’s message to students was focused on the idea that making a threat is not harmless and can have serious consequences.
