MERCEDES, Texas (RFD News) — The USDA has confirmed more than 40 cases of New World screwworm during the current outbreak, raising concerns among producers and veterinarians in South Texas.
Brooks County veterinarian Dr. Michael Vickers says while the number of confirmed cases is still relatively low, the recent increase in the latter half of July is concerning.
“It’s almost a double, a double of a number of reported cases from just a couple of weeks ago to last week,” Vickers said. “There were some cases in Starr County. So far, it seems like it’s a slow process and it’s a slow situation, but them having a double take in reported cases in the matter of a week is a concern.”
While producers continue monitoring the outbreak, cattleman Mike England praised the USDA’s response to help limit the spread.
“I think Secretary Rollins and all of her company, all the people that are working with her, have done an excellent job.”
Members of the South Texas agricultural community say they will continue watching reported case numbers as the response to New World screwworm continues.
