A north Phoenix father says an automated school background check wrongly flagged him as a sex offender while enrolling his daughter. Jonathan Castillo says he was trying to enroll his daughter at Las Brisas Elementary when he was told he could not be on campus. The school later apologized and said his middle name and physical characteristics matched someone listed in a Wisconsin sex offender registry. Castillo, a veteran and former combat medic, says the accusation was devastating and wants to know how the match was approved. A private investigator says automated background checks can be incomplete and unreliable, especially when incorrect information is entered. The district says Castillo has been cleared, but he is demanding answers about the vendor and safeguards intended to prevent another false match.
